In Africa the white people had settled in the Southern-most part where the climate is cool and plenty of farming land. These were people known as "Boers" who came to settle from Holland and Europe. I believe it was part of what was called "Rhodesia" or now known as Zimbabwe. There was a writer (Bosman) who wrote in a small book "Unto Dusk" that I remembered reading.

The story was told about a white settler killed by a "Kafir" ( tall Africian native - same size like the white people) or warrior who were the cattle men until they lose their grazing ground to the settlers. So their war was about the land.

One incident occurred when a white settle was killed by an ambush. In return the native Kafir was shot by another who was hidden in the bush. Their corpses laid side by side in the bush, and the animals had came to devour the flesh. Nothing remained except the white skeletons of two fighters - one black another white. However when the bones were concerned it was altogether shinny white; nothing left of the flesh.

The family of the white man came back to look for the remains. Surprise at what they saw; there were the bones of two skeletons as the Man who shot the Kafir located the place where they were lain, however unable to distinguish the white from the black!

So the family took home to bury all the skeleton in the single grave marked with the name of the white person. There was nothing they could do about it; as the DNA testing did not existed yet.

Whois this famous person JB Jayaretnam? And of course we all , Singaporeans and Malaysian know him as a opposition leader just as we known Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. Yet many of us probably never truly understand and know him as a humble person and a gentleman.

The first time I met him was not in the crowd but somewhere in Orchard Road (Tanglin side) on the steps of a hotel (Marco Polo) steps facing the place where the traders' hotel now stands. He was just walking down the steps. I recognized a broken man who the media had made fun of, and lost much of his wealth and property in law suits (with the leaders of PAP). He had my sympathy too, and I went to shake his hands and put a few dollars (I had only a few) into his hands. I said to him, " You are my hero!" And he smiled and then I believed he remembered me too: the taxi driver who put money into my hands!

Over the years I met him at places where he was selling the workers' papers or his books and I seldom give lesS than $10 even though that was my last few dollars in my own pocket. I was never rich enough (seldom carry more than a few hundred dollars) to contribute much to help him however, it is the many common people in Singapore who had given him the moral and the little financial support that probably help him to fight on. He was as our hero who never give up! I am talking about the millions of Singaporeans who supported the opposition : many who had suffered under the administration that had previously disregarded the aspirations of the people who wanted to work and lived here peacefully without being oppressed by a coercive state, and a heavy handled garmen who had heavily taxed and fined EVEN IMPRISONED SOME OF OUR LEADERS from day One since the garmen of PAP came into power. The cost may not be the guide for buyers. It is unlikely people buy for reason that it is cheaper (like promotion items and on sale). Sometimes shop-owners just made their items to be (tagged as) on sale , 90 per cent discount or closing down sale! purposely because it's the way buyers shop for things.

I brought an onion and the price is SG$3.22 (or priced at SG5.50 per kilogram), and it is slightly over half a kilo. Was I happy with the buy it? Yes..I brought it, and pay for what's worth! It is sold at the NTUC's fair price. Besides, it is imported from oversea (Japan) and "organic" (grown without fertilizers or chemicals). There lots of onions looking the same, and they are priced $1.20 per kilogram by weight (or about 1/5 of the price I paid!). Suppose it's isn't imported, and grown without the same care as organic farm vegetable are grown, is it fair to sell it for SG$5.50 per kilogram? And who will buy it?

BTW how can you tell?
By the price tag...so the authority should help us out..please put your mark that it's ORGANICally grown for sale!

NB no authority will likely do anything to ease the fierce market competition against NTUC, or any large businesses ..hehehe..the garmen? they had their bite with GST!
