Many Catholics started streaming into Christ the King church in Ang Mo Kio early Friday afternoon.

It was a sombre mood, with the church stripped of all decorations and no music - on a day meant for prayer, fasting and abstinence.

There will be a celebration three days later on Easter Sunday, when Christians believe Christ is resurrected.

The young ones were not left out either as they attended a simplified version of the service in a separate room.
